You probably have not missed Scandinavia’s early written language – the runes, famous for being carved into stones to memorize events, or give recognition to people who once were walking on this earth. The alphabet of the runes is called Futhark and there are actually a few versions that have been used through the ages, but the main ones is the older and the younger Futhark. The runes are associated with the Vikings, but did you know that the very first rune carvings we know about were made in Denmark around mid-2nd century. Yes, that is right, runes have been around for quite some time and were in some parts of Scandinavia used up until the 17th century. The first runes were not carved on a stone, no. They were carved on a comb and spelled the name “Harja”, probably the name of former owner of the comb.Runes were most likely created in Denmark during this period as a result of contact with the Roman empire. In the beginning, runes mostly spelled out names of the maker or owner, and more advanced texts came later. The comb was found in the bog Vimosen in Funen, Denmark. It was not, to say the least, the only object found in the bog. Far from it. It was accompanied by about 2500 objects: everything from animal parts to weaponry. The items were deposited during a span of 300 years, from before the birth of Christ into the 3rd century. The offerings show a power struggle in Northern Europe, and the victors were to sacrifice goods in the bog as a token of gratitude to the gods. The comb had most likely belonged to a solider who decided it was a worthy sacrifice, or maybe, he had fallen during one of the battles and his personal belongings were given to the bog. We do not know, and that is one of the mysteries of archaeology. But what we know is this: the Futhark is quite older than what most people know. Krigernes dunputer kunne lette turen til dødsriket

gemini.no

See MoreSee Less
